Emotionally Intelligence ‘A Life Ring Not An Investment’

Think With Your Heart and Love With Your Mind; A unique concept of intersecting head and heart to master your intelligence, shape your interactions with others, understand more of yourself and  transform your world.

Choosing how you think, feel and act defines how and what you learn, allowing you to set priorities, determine the majority of your daily actions and be more yourself. Research suggests it is responsible for as much as 80% of the "success" in our lives."

According to the book "Emotional Intelligence," evidence suggests that it is "as powerful, and at times more powerful, than IQ," and provides "an advantage in any domain of life."

Emotional intelligence can be measured reliably, exists as a unitary ability, and is related to, but independent of, standard intelligence and broadens our understanding of what it means to be smart. It means that within some of us who are labeled "romantics," "highly sensitive" or "bleeding hearts," serious information processing is taking place.

While stress is a challenge to almost everyone, new studies show Emotional Intelligence reduces stress and professionals high in emotional intelligence are far more effective in a number of key performance areas and scored far better in an assessment of job performance and life success, showing that these skills are critical for professionals – and especially those in leadership positions.

The study also found that the power of EQ, or emotional intelligence, was even greater for the most senior team members.  While on average EQ explains over 66% of the variation in performance scores, for the most senior team members that increases to nearly 80%.   In other words, the more senior you are, the more important it is to be an expert with emotions.

“Around the globe we’ve seen that emotional intelligence is the difference that makes the difference.  Leaders who choose to be emotionally intelligent create mission success and drive value,” says Joshua Freedman COO of one of the world’s leading authorities on the development of emotional intelligence.

Freedman says “EQ is most essential in times of stress and challenge; training in this area is a ‘life ring,’ not an ‘investment.’” He is quick to point out that developing these skills isn’t a major expense in time and resource. “We’re not talking about implementing some expensive or complex new system. EQ is something to be – a little more each week.”

7 Steps to greater Emotional Intelligence

1. Conscious Choice ‐ When you choose to live in a state of Conscious Choice you start to become consciously skilled experimenting with new mindsets and behaviours, testing the consequences and noticing fall back to old behaviours.

2. Observe ‐ Become aware of your personal PAIN Map, your emotional and mental states and reactions. Simply observe what’s present with out questioning, reaction or judgment.

3. Surrender – Relinquish resistance to the emotion, thought or feeling, do not try to push it away, pretend it doesn’t exist or matter. Emotions are like a child in a candy store more you resist them the louder they become.

4. Acceptance – Accept the emotion is present, name it without judgment, thus freeing you from the mind and reconnecting you with being.

5. Drop the Story – Every challenge offers opportunity for growth. Drop the need to continually rehash stories and situations, as this keeps the situation
alive and builds on dysfunctional emotional and mental states.

6. Master your physiology, focus and language all of which influence our emotional states.

7. Make new mind sets and behaviours part of your daily routine.
